In a world where status and social acceptance is often determined by where you live and where you work, there are still many people for whom those most fundamental goals are out of their reach. According to the Census Bureau, approximately 40 million people in the United States live with a disability. Of those 40 million, over 90% are unemployed or under-employed. Mary* is one of those people.
Mary* spent more time as an inpatient for behavioral intervention than she spent time in her community. Even after moving into her new home with Person Directed Supports, Inc., Mary spent a lot of time in hospitals and in emergency rooms. That was six years ago. Today, Mary has her own home in the community. Mary and her supporters measure her success not by the fact that she has not been in the hospital or an emergency room for five years, but rather that she has built meaningful relationships with people and that she has been involved in educational, social, and employment opportunities in her community, with the help and support of Person Directed Supports, Inc.
Person Directed Supports, Inc. is a Pennsylvania non-profit organization that provides homes, advocacy, support, and employment services to all people with developmental disabilities. We have fostered a reputation for pioneering the creation of new and exciting choices that lead to greater economic and social independence for people with disabilities.
Throughout our 10-year history, we have worked diligently to build a strong sense of community and social enterprise, while remaining committed to staying person centered in our approach to providing services and supports.
